Do Follow vs. No Follow

Google, Matt Cutts and Nofollow vs Dofollow

02-Jan-2012

Wayne Sharer

I’m always amazed how many myths and urban legends continue to abound in forums by the bloviating experts who have no references other than a ton of bloviating comments.  The nofollow vs dofollow discussion is one of those that tends to have answers with no references.

Most of the time, the answers are mixed with truth and urban legend.

So below are two videos where Goolge’s Matt Cutts on the Google Webmaster Channel tells you the way it is from the Google search engine perspective and the customer perspective.  Are you ready to end the myths?  In the next 4 minutes and 15 seconds, you’ll know the facts.

Alright, watch this short video…

And this one, too… don’t skip this!…

So what’s the bottom line?  As I’ve always told you… you need both nofollow and dofollow.  Most blogs are nofollow, and for good reason — you likely end up with a ton of spammers on your site if you choose dofollow.

Thus most relevant, authoritative websites use nofollow for their out going links, except for the links they choose on their own (refer to the videos above for reasons).

But remember, real people click all kinds of links, and they don’t care if the webmaster made it nofollow or dofollow.  Get the drift here?

If you choose to keep passing up on nofollow because you are worried about it counting in your back link count, well all I can say is too bad for you – but I’m glad to take your potential visitors myself  😉

What are your thoughts?  Or don’t you want to tell because it is nofollow?

See you next time
